Clock in the wall
Jan 15th, 2010 by admin

Recently I’ve been hearing a lot about 3D posters. Hanging right off the wall, they are, comin right atcha! Well that’s what’s going on here too, to a degree. Designer by the name of Leo Yiu Chun Pong’s whipped up a nicely done concept and execution for a wall timepiece called the “Insert Clock.” I think you’ll find it tells time nicely in the strangest way.

It’s hanging right off the wall! Reminds me of an episode of the X-Files where two bits of reality exist in the same place, all fused. That seems to be happening here too.

I want this clock. Someone can buy me this clock.

Intelligent Wristwatch Gaming
Jun 24th, 2009 by admin

It is only every few years that a new hand-held video game system gets invented. They keep getting smaller, having better graphics, and being basically the same amount of weird and bulky to carry with. What Wilson Song was tasked with doing was making a gamer that not only utilized the best in chips for graphics, but also stored a pen, earbuds, and had the ability to become smaller for easy carrying. Peel and see!

What a pretty looking little system we have here! Wilson Song this is just what I’d be using if it were real! The “Samsung WM” has earbuds and pen that clip intuitively into the back panel, a giant screen, and the ability to be tossed on the wrist like one of those slap-bracelets from the 1980s. The controls work with new motion-capture technology and a camera in the back to see what precisely your thumbs and feet are up to.

And it’ made of gold! Or regular materials.

Wrist Phone For Troubled Times
Apr 24th, 2009 by admin

Given the volatile situation (political and natural) around most countries, I totally buy the idea of having an emergency phone around my space. Recent incidents of carnages and natural disasters imply that even a simple shopping, holiday or business trip can take an ugly turn instantaneously. This doesn’t mean that we stop traveling; it simply means we arm ourselves better. The Disposable Pre-Paid Phone could be that life-saving device, which could get you out of a sticky situation.

Simple, non pretentious, the phone is a very basic device that is devoid of the fancy stuff. This makes its cheap to manufacture and market. Another point in its favor is the portability factor; you can simply wrap it around your wrist. Leaving the connectivity issues aside, the phone has the potential to make its mark. But that doesn’t mean you don’t take your regular cellphone along!

Though I’ve seen the previous concept of a wrist phone, as I remembered, it was more flexible, but it’s still not killing the good concept of this one. Only there is one point I don’t really see it as a future gadget, where the display should be more dynamic.

X-watch: Mutant Timepiece
Apr 17th, 2009 by admin

Straight out of Poland, Damian Kozlik has designed an interesting if not confusing timepiece dubbed “X-Watch”. His attempt at a universal time piece able to be used by sighted and the blind is a step in the right direction. Not sure if X marks the right spot on this one but his rubber strap housing carries an array of LEDs behind graduated glass with extruded braille numbers that chris-cross to highlight and center the correct time. Seems like a lot of acrobatics just to tell time, but maybe life is truly in the journey and not the destination… even when counting the hours. If you ask for more details, our heads may explode. This was a hard one to figure out…let it go.

Texts from the designer:

“X – watch” is universal and integrating L.E.D. timepiece. It can be used by sighted and blind people. Watch case and straps can be made of rubber. Dial is compounded of Leds. Mechanism of the watch (IC board) is placed under them.

How blind people can use it? It’s simple. It’s just to move a finger along the graduated watch glass. There are extruded Braille numbers. When a person touches highlighted panel hears a sound.

How it works? Every segment of the watch glass works like separated touch switch. There are two solutions possible:

1. Every panel works like capacitance touch switch. It needs only one electrode to function. The electrode can be placed behind a panel. It works using body capacitance. When a person touches it, it increases the capacitance and triggers the sound.

2. Every panel works like resistance touch switch. This solution needs metal units to function. There are two thin pieces of metal on the each panel. It works by lowering the resistance between them. It is much simpler in construction compared to the first solution. Placing a finger across the metal units achieves a turn on the sound. Removing the finger from the metal pieces turns the sound off.

Gaming with style
Apr 3rd, 2009 by admin

Often overlooked by product designers, casual non-digital bar games like darts, billiards and foosball, have always been good for intellect avoidance, drunken challenges and ice breaking awkward dates. Sadly, most of these games have seriously lacked aesthetic presence and look like they were designed by retired auto salesmen living in log cabins. “11 – the beautiful game” by GRO Design changes all the rules and tackled the most action packed pub player. Mimicking the grandeur of actual football stadiums around the globe, this polished and slick design takes the game of gaming to a whole new level.

Math Wall Watch
Mar 28th, 2009 by admin

ac3f_pop_quiz_clockPop Quiz, hotshot. Think back to a time when you were a young geek. Sure, you were brilliant at math, but being asked to solve problems on the chalkboard… That’s the stuff of nightmares. Thankfully, that time is over… Or is it? The smell of chalk, and the feel of the blackboard is still fresh in your mind. If you close your eyes, you can almost feel the eyes staring at your back as you labor to engage your brain and simplify the polynomial.

Can you feel your heart beat faster? Are your hands sweaty? Relax! This is just a clock! This lovely new timepiece appears to have been hand-written by that evil math teacher we all had to endure. Each hour is marked by a simple math problem. Solve it and solve the riddle of time. Or, you can just know that “52 – x2 + x = 10″ happens to live in the “7 o’clock” position* and be done with it.

* – Yes, we know that 52 – x2 + x = 10 allows for 7 and -6 as a possible answer, but since there is no such thing as -6 o’clock, the correct answer becomes glaringly obvious.
